A herringbone gear, a specific type of double helical gear, is a special type of gear that is a side to side (not face to face) combination of two helical gears of opposite hands.From the top, each helical groove of this gear looks like the letter V, and many together form a herringbone pattern (resembling the bones of a fish such as a herring). Unlike helical gears, herringbone gears do not produce an additional axial load.

Herringbone gear specification
- Circular pitch(CP)– is a direct measurement of the distance between the center of one tooth to the center of the adjacent tooth. Maximum CP up to 72inches in diameter.
- Diametrical pitch– is the ratio of the number of teeth to the pitch diameter (in inches) of a gear. Maximum of 2DP.
- Module(mod or M)– is used for metric gears and is the ratio of pitch diameter (in millimeters) to the number of teeth. Maximum of 12 Module.
- Pressure angle– is the angle of tooth drive action, or, the angle between the line of force between meshing teeth and the tangent to the pitch circle at the point of mesh. Typical pressure angles are 14.5⁰ or 20⁰. 380 maximum BHN specifications.

What is difference between herringbone gear and double helical gear?
In herringbone gear, no gap is provided between two halves. So teeth with left hand helix touches the teeth with right hand helix. In double helical gear, small relief gap is provided between two halves. So teeth with left hand helix do not touch the teeth with right hand helix.
